About this Countdown Timer

A countdown timer tracks time remaining until a fixed future date and time, rather than counting up from zero the way a stopwatch does. It's the right tool whenever you're working toward a specific moment rather than measuring elapsed duration.

Countdown timer vs. stopwatch vs. kitchen timer

  • Countdown timer: counts down to a fixed date/time in the future, like a launch or event
  • Stopwatch: counts up from zero to measure how long something takes
  • Kitchen/interval timer: counts down a short, repeatable duration (10 minutes, 25 minutes) rather than to a specific calendar date

Why the target keeps ticking accurately

A well-built countdown recalculates the remaining time from the actual system clock on each update rather than simply subtracting one second per tick, which prevents the display from drifting out of sync if the browser tab is inactive, throttled, or the device goes to sleep briefly.
