About this Unit Converter
NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 due to a metric/imperial unit mismatch in navigation calculations — unit errors have real consequences. This tool covers eight categories and shows the exact formula used for each conversion. Temperature is a common gotcha: Celsius to Fahrenheit needs both multiplication and addition (°F = °C × 9/5 + 32), unlike the other seven categories, which convert with a single multiplication or division against a fixed factor.
Results are shown to up to 8 decimal places for most categories (6 for temperature), with trailing zeros trimmed, so a result like 3.5 displays as "3.5" rather than "3.50000000" — this is display rounding only, the underlying conversion factors used are exact. One category-specific note: the Time converter's "year" and "month" options use average lengths (365.2425 days per year, accounting for leap years; ~30.44 days per month) rather than a specific calendar year or month, since those vary — for date-specific calculations, use the Date Calculator instead.
