About this Character Counter
A character counter measures every character in a block of text, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces. It matters most when a platform or form enforces a hard limit — go one character over and a post gets truncated, a form gets rejected, or a title gets cut off in search results.
Common character limits worth knowing
- X (Twitter) post: 280 characters
- SMS text message: 160 characters (70 if it contains emoji or non-Latin characters, since that switches the message to Unicode encoding)
- Google title tag: roughly 50–60 characters before truncation in search results
- Meta description: roughly 150–160 characters
- Instagram bio: 150 characters
- YouTube video title: 100 characters
With spaces vs. without spaces
Most platform limits count spaces as characters — an SMS limit of 160 includes every space in the message. A small number of legacy systems (some old database fields, certain print specifications) only count non-space characters, so this tool tracks both numbers separately.
Example
The sentence "Free shipping on orders over $50" is 33 characters with spaces and 28 without. That fits comfortably inside an SMS limit, an X post, or a meta description with room to spare.
